Pecha Kucha Night at Royal/T

What:
Royal/T in collaboration presents their second Pecha Kutcha Night. Pecha Kucha Night is a free and informal forum where architects, artists, designers, photographers, and other interesting people can come together to share their work, their interests, and their ideas. At this Pecha Kucha Night, 20 presenters will project 20 slides for 20 seconds each. The presenters can use their time to show any images and talk about any topic they choose. Pecha Kucha Night (named for the Japanese words for the sound of conversation) was begun by Klein Dytham Architects in Tokyo in 2003, where they continue to be held monthly, and has spread virally to over 120 cities around the world.
Royal/T is the new playful collision of spaces -cafe/shop/art space- and Los Angeles' first Japanese inspired maid café.

Three Artists / One Evening Event
HRK Art presents an evening of art featuring Valentin Toledo, Miguel Osuna, Kim Kimbro. Reception with the artists will be Saturday, March 1, 2008, 6pm – 10pm, 410 South Spring Street, Los Angeles. Viewing thereafter by appointment only

This is a one-night event in the downtown Los Angeles historic banking district, inside a 1914 building designed by Morgan, Walls & Clements (the firm which also designed the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood.) This section of downtown has become a vibrant art center and boasts an array of trendy new restaurants.

Kim Kimbro’s deeply emotional and evocative animal paintings explore primal emotions such as obsession, unconditional love, contempt and faith. She draws on the experiences of early man who first scratched animal imagery on cave walls as they defined their relationships with the animal world. Kim likes to paint with her three dogs around her because they remind her that the most poignant qualities humans have are the ones we share with animals. Kim’s work has been featured in numerous shows in Los Angeles including at the prestigious Barnsdall Art Center.
Valentin Toledo creates his “machines” (as he calls them) by painting on the reverse side of large-scale tempered glass plates, carefully dripping and guiding the paint without the use of a brush. The results are stunning images that seem to live within the glass as they delight the viewer with serendipitous color and form. Born in Seville, Spain, Valentin worked for many years in Barcelona and Madrid doing art direction for prestigious magazines such as Vogue, Marie Claire, and Elle, among others. His fine art work has been exhibited in Madrid, Barcelona, London, Seville, Paris, Frankfurt, Los Angeles and New York.
Miguel Osuna’s work uses representational methods to springboard into various degrees of abstraction, creating environments that are both familiar and challenging to the viewer’s eye. Miguel’s early training as an architect infuses his paintings with a unique sense of structure and scale. His work has been exhibited all over the U.S. and Mexico including the Katzen Arts Center of American University, the Instituto Cultural de Mexico in Washington D.C. and the Mazatlán Museum of Art.
